Stay Informed: Trillium Payment Dates for 2024 Announced

The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is available to eligible low to middle-income Ontario residents to help pay for energy costs, property taxes, and sales taxes. The OTB is a monthly payment that combines:  

  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC). Tax-free payment that is meant to assist with your property tax and sales tax on energy costs. 
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC). Tax-free payment that helps cover higher home energy costs for residents living in Northern Ontario. 
  • Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC). Tax-free payment that is meant to assist with the sales taxes you pay. 

Your 2023 income tax and benefit return is used to calculate your 2024 Trillium benefit payments. Payments are typically issued on the 10th of each month starting July 2024 to June 2025.  

OTB Payment Dates 

The OTB benefit combines the OEPTC, NOEC, and OSTC into one monthly payment. The Trillium benefit payment dates for 2024 are:1 

  • January 10, 2024
  • February 9, 2024 
  • March 8, 2024
  • April 10, 2024
  • May 10, 2024
  • June 10, 2024
  • July 10, 2024
  • August 9, 2024
  • September 10, 2024
  • October 10, 2024
  • November 8, 2024
  • December 10, 2024 

OTB Payment Amount 

The OTB payment combines three benefits: OEPTC, NOEC, and OSTC. The maximum credit for each benefit are listed below. 

Credit amount for OEPTC 

If you qualify for OEPTC, you can get a maximum of:2 

  • $1,248 if you’re between 18 to 64 years old
  • $1,421 if you’re 65 years or older
  • $277 if you live on a reserve or in public long-term care housing
  • $25 for the time you lived in an eligible college, university or private school residence in 2023

Credit amount for NOEC

If you qualify for NOEC, you can get a maximum of:2

  • $280 if you’re single 
  • $277 for families 

Credit amount for OSTC

If you qualify for OSTC, you can receive a maximum of $360.2 

It’s possible to receive an additional credit of $360 for your: 

  • Spouse or common-law partner and
  • Each dependent child under 19 years of age on the 1st of the payment month

How to Apply for OTB 

All you have to do to apply for OTB is file your personal income tax and benefit return and the ON-BEN application form

It’s important you file your tax return even if you don’t have any income. 

Once you file, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will review your return and determine if you’re eligible for any credits. 

OTB Eligibility 

To receive OTB payments, you need to meet the eligibility criteria for at least one of the three credits. 

Ontario energy and property tax credit (OEPTC)

Eligibility for the OEPTC requires:3 

You’re a resident of Ontario on December 31, 2023, and one of the following conditions applies:  

  • 18 years old before June 1, 2025
  • Had a spouse or common-law partner on or before December 31, 2023
  • Parent who lives or previously lived with your child 

For 2023, one of the following conditions applies to you: 

  • Paid rent for your principal residence (subject to Ontario municipal or education property tax)
  • Paid property tax for your main residence 
  • Lived in a public or non-profit long-term care home in Ontario and paid for some of the accommodation.  

Northern Ontario Energy Credit (NOEC)

To qualify for the NOEC you need to live in Northern Ontario as of December 31, 2023. Northern Ontario districts include:4

  • Algoma
  • Cochrane
  • Kenora
  • Manitoulin
  • Nipissing
  • Parry Sound
  • Rainy River
  • Sudbury (including the City of Greater Sudbury)
  • Thunder Bay
  • Timiskaming

You must also meet one of the following criteria: 

  • 18 years or older before June 1, 2025
  • Had a spouse or common-law partner on or before December 31, 2023 
  • Parent who lives or previously lived with your child 

Eligibility for 2024 NOEC also requires you to meet one of the following conditions in 2023: 

  • Paid rent or property tax for your principal residence in Northern Ontario
  • Lived on a reserve and paid for your home energy costs 
  • Lived in a public or non-profit long-term care home in Northern Ontario and paid some of your accommodation 

Ontario Sales Tax Credit (OSTC)

To qualify for OSTC, you must be an Ontario residence and meet at least one of the following criteria sometime before June 1 2025:2

  • 19 years or older
  • Currently or previously married or in a common-law partnership
  • Parent who lives or previously lived with your child

Ontario Trillium Benefits: Don’t Miss Out

If you live in Ontario and are a low to middle-income individual or family, you may qualify for the Ontario Trillium Benefit payments. All you have to do to apply is complete your income tax and benefit return including the ON-BEN application form. The CRA will review your return to determine if you’re eligible to receive the credit. 

If you don’t live in Ontario, there are many other government benefits you can check out to see if you qualify, including the Canada Carbon Rebate (formerly known as the Climate Action Incentive Payment), Canada Child Benefit (CCB), and Canada Workers Benefit (CWB)
